Coast and Castles, a 200 mile (322 km) self-guided journey from Newcastle to Edinburgh, one of the classic bike routes in the UK, a stunning ride that is accessible to all. Travelling on the National Cycle Network Route 1 the tour begins in Newcastle where you follow the River Tyne through Newcastle to Tynemouth and the North Sea. From here you follow the coast up to the Berwick, past the many castles and exquisite coast line, and into the Scottish Borders. After crossing into Scotland you cycle along the glorious Scottish Borders to the town of Melrose and home of Rugby Sevens!. The final leg heads north towards the Scottish capital, through the lovely Moorfoot Hills where you get our first wonderful view of Edinburgh.
We can also arrange for tours that wish to stay on the coast after Berwick, following the Scottish coastline north to Dunbar, then west through Portobello to Edinburgh. Please enquire for more information.

On route you pass, amongst the stunning Nothumberland coastline and Scottish Borders, Tynemouth Priory, Bamburgh Castle, Warwick Castle, Melrose Priory, Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle, while also having the chance to visit the Castle in Newcastle and Alnwick Castle amazing castles which featured in both the Harry Potter series and Downton Abbey. This route is also part of the greater EuroVelo North Sea Cycle Route, the world's longest signed international cycle route travelling through 7 countries around the North Sea.

There is an alternative route available which continues to follow the coast after Berwick, passing through Dunbar , the birthplace of the famous naturalist John Muir, on the way to Edinburgh. This route is 170 miles (273 km) in distance, a total of 30 miles (48 km) shorter than route 1.

The Example starting in Newcastleyou follow the River Tyne down to its mouth and Tynemouth, where you start your journey north and up the glorious Northumberland coast. Following the National Cycle Network Route 1, the route takes you through many towns and villages, like Blyth, Lynemouthand Amble, as well as passing Tynemouth Priory and Warkworth Castle on our way to Alnmouthand our first night. Alnmouth itself is a short distance from Alnwick, home to Alnwick Castle which has been used in many film and TV productions, including Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. The coastline is magnificent and unspoilt for miles and miles with sandy beaches, nature reserves, coves and bays being protected by rocky outcrops, and coastal islands, it is also fairly flat making it very easy to saunter along and take it all in..
Day two sets out from Alnwick and continues very much as the first day, magnificent views and easy riding. Passing the magnificent Bamburgh Castle and ,time permitting, crossing the Lindisfarne Causeway to Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, and the villages of Embletonand Belfordbefore drawing close to the border town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed. You spend your second night in Berwick.
After leaving Berwick you cross the border and head into the picturesque Tweed valley, here you take the quiet country lanes, past traditional pubs, ruined abbeys and old communities towards our third night's accommodation, Melrose. Passing Tweed Valley Forest Park, Norham Castle and Kelso, a pretty village on the on the Junction of the rivers Tweed and Teviot and home to Floors Castle, until you come to Melrose, home to the 11th century Melrose Abbey and birthplace of the game of Rugby Sevens.
After leaving Melrose you take the gentle climb into the Moorfoot Hills and Midlothian and our first glimpse of Edinburgh. The Moorfoot Hills are lovely rolling hills, surrounding you as you ascend and giving wide panoramic views from the top, all the way down to the Scottish capital. You now drift on down to Edinburgh, easy cycling all the way, and enter into Holyrood Park, famous site of Arthur's Seat, and follow the park's road around. From here you make our way through the cycle paths of Edinburgh to its famous castle and on to our accommodation for the night, where it's time to freshen up and prepare for a celebratory meal and drink (or two) in the beautiful surroundings of the Scottish capital city, Edinburgh or your retrurn transport to Newcastle
